Like all specialised vehicles, usually it is not made by the vehicle manufacturer. What you will find with most vans/trucks that are fitted with specialised equipment, the owner will have bought a bare-bones vehicle and then had a commercial body-builder (car bodies, not buff bodies) custom make a body for them. The only manufacturer standard bodies that would be sold from the dealership would be trays or pantechs (enclosed back. Even then, some dealerships send vehicles to body builders to have special trays or other things fitted. If you're wanting to get a vehicle (like an ice-cream truck) built, the best bet is to firstly research the bare-bones truck itself - compare brands. When you've decided on a brand, then look through your telephone directory for body builders. Contact a few and given them the details of what vehicle you are looking at, and what you are going to be using it for. Get quotes and fitting times, and if possible get the names of a few of their previous customers. Don't be afraid to ring these people and ask what they think of the product/service - it is a good indicator. Once all that's done, all you need to do is tell the dealership that you want a specialised body fitted. Give them the details of the company you've selected (or see which ones they use), and ask if the vehicle can be fitted out before delivery. Most dealerships can, and should be willing to, have a body fitted before delivery. They pay the body-builders and then just add the price to the vehicle's pricetag. This is the easiest way to get a specialty body truck. To put the body on after delivery can be a hassle, because 1) you may not be able to register, and hence not drive, a truck without its body, so 2) you would need to organise transportation to the body builders, then 3) organise getting the roadworty inspection and finally 4) get the thing registered before you could even drive it on the road.
