Help answer this question below.
First: in the USA, it is illegal to put things in other people's mailboxes unless you are a postman.
They work this way: when you want to mail something, you put that something in the mailbox with proper postage and raise the flag located on its side. Then, the postman comes, takes the contents inside, and leaves your daily mail. You, after the postman leaves, retrieve that which was inside your mailbox.

Thanks for answering! Does he put the flag down again? And what happens if you want to hand deliver a letter to someone?
by Carmella on June 14th, 2007
He pushes it down. It is a very simple mechanical flag that slides up and down. If you're lucky, I'll make you a video of my mailbox's flag in operation. If you want to hand-deliver a letter, you had best stick it in someone's door or on their doorstep or porch. I've never done that, actually.

Woohoo! A video, that would be so exciting, please do! I'm going to investigate this issue of hand delivering letters though. It seems unfair you can't put stuff in people's mailboxes :-(

I think a friend of the family painted it.
