  • I'm not quite sure if it will work on a laptop, but here is how it works on my desktop PCs using XP home. if u wish to simply change your (or someone else's) password or change an account type, restart your computer. continuously tap "F8" until a screen pops up with a bunch of start-up options. select safe-mode. then, at the windows login screen, click "administrator". then simply go to control panel/user accounts and do as you please.
  • If you're referring to your Windows administrator password, there isn't too much you can do directly. One solution might be to boot into another OS such as Linux (maybe by using an Ubuntu LiveCD) and then accessing the hard drive directly If there is a BIOS password presenting the system from even booting, this could be trickier. The typical desktop solution is to clear the CMOS by toggling a jumper. This is probably not possible so you'd have to leave it unplugged from the mains and then wait around for several weeks. Both of these "solutions" would result in your BIOS losing it's settings, such as the time and date If it is a BIOS password, Dell might be able to advise you directly on how to clear the CMOS
  • LOST PASSWORD XP When you install XP there actually is a TRUE Administrator ID that is created. This account has the name "Administrator: as opposed to your user account. If at a command prompt you type the command net users this will list ALL the accounts on that ,machine. You will probably see here the Administrator account. If you don't know the password for this account you should be able to change it by typing the command net user administrator new_password where new_password is the new password for the account. At the XP login screen, try logging on now with the user id administrator and the password that you just created. If this fails then as PC starts enter safe mode F8 Then go to control panel User’s accounts Choose “Administrator” once in then choose the account you wish to change the password on Then choose change password Set new password, close all windows and reboot Enter new password and you should be in
