A pregnant one :-) I would have run a mile, maybe further.

I have had that happen before as well. Except we squashed a nest looking webb thing when it happened. It's absolutly terrifying. Sorry to hear about it!

Sounds like a brown recluse spider. And yes, they are poisonous.

Everyone automatically associates brown spiders with brown recluse, its nonsense. Brown Recluse spiders are typically found in inaccessable areas(crawlspaces, basements, in boxes, under logs, areas that arent frequented) Sounds like a typical wolf spider. Remember that all spiders are poisonous just to different degrees. Brown recluses are more prevealent in the southern states, and a brown recluse doesnt have dark markings, its brown with a light brown violin shape on its cephlothorax.

Very doubtful it was a brown recluse..they are very small and are called a recluse because they tend to stay hidden. It sounds like you squished a pretty much harmless wood spider. :)

Probably a wolf spider. They carry their babies on their back and walk around with them. They are brown with dark markings (like many spiders). Their young are so tiny that unless you get quite close it just looks like they have a large abdomen. If you squish one, the babies will scatter. Spiders don't get "pregnant" with baby spiders, they make egg sacks and the baby spiders come out of there. Wolf spiders are also pretty harmless, though without a picture, you will never know for sure

You saw a wolf spider. Mother wolf spiders carry their babies on their back.
