It works for some countries but not all. It depends on which ones. If you have an American license you can drive in Canada and Mexico.

You can drive in the whole of the EU (including switzerland and norway) with a US driving license!

You can use your American license in the UK for any visits you may make. it is only if you are going to become a resident you would be required to have a British license. American Serviceman drive inall European Countries with US licenses as do all tourists. It would be very awkward for some tourists not to be able to hire a car on holiday. This rule applies for all European Countries and others to my knowledge British people can also use their UK license in the US.

Anyone know about the rules in Turkey? I will be traveling there and not sure where to obtain an international license/permit? or if one is even needed? If needed, is it hard to obtain?
-
Turkey will allow you to drive for 30 days using an American license. You will need insurance to cover you as an American driver. Have an accident without, tTurkish jails are very harsh.

I understand that in Ireland they won't rent you a car without a ROI license or International. And one thing to always keep in mind: If you have an accident the other driver will quickly point out it was your fault if you have a foreign license as you do not know their traffic laws. Not much defense on that either. Lots of Japanese driver in the US cause fatal accidents driving to the Grand Canyon. In Japan they drive on the left and cars have right hand steering. The result is many head ons. I knew one victim. Her husband was killed that way. The $35K didn't help out much for herself and 5 kids. The driver returned to Japan and immune to any further suit.
