  • I'd suppose you could be allergic to certain dyes, bleaching agents, or chemicals used to treat the paper, but the actual wood pulp I'm not sure.
  • no iam not as for other people i dont know one time this guy told me he was allergic to water i was like what can that also be true? i wonder
  • I have an allergy to certain types of paper. Usually it is recycled paper, but I recently bought some higher quality Office Depot Ink Jet Paper and the second I touched it I knew I was allergic to it. I HAD to work with it to get some files put together (I had nothing else to use!)... and after about 15 minutes I had a bad rash on my hands and my hands stung badly. My boyfriend had to rinse vinegar over my hands to get the stinging to go down... and a few hours later I could still feel it in some parts of my hand. I don't know what it is... dyes... chemicals... bleaches... but the second I touch a piece of paper I know whether or not I have an allergy to it. I've had it since I was very young because I remember back in elementary school I hated to use recycled paper because it didn't feel right. People usually don't believe me when I tell them, but it is very real. It seems very uncommon because I actually found this forum while looking for some sort of explanation/answer to what was going on with me :)
  • Yes, I am allergic to using sand paper in the restroom. It sort of chafes my a$$.
  • To the person allergic to paper. As completely absurd as it sounds, I also suffer from some sort of allergy to paper. It is actually a very serious problem seeing that I am constantly writing and reviewing paper documents all day. Now reading books causes me to have an allergy attack if I handle paper for more than 2 hours. What on earth can someone do about this? It is so bad that my eyes start itching, water, turn bright red and I start having double vision (can barley see). I stop being able to breath out of my left sinus and I get completely dizzy. My hands and arms start swelling and get red blotch spots. This has been going on for 10 years now and the past 2 years is when the severe allergy attacks started. I had allergy testing done and I am allergic to several trees, pine being the most prevalent. I read that most all paper comes from pine trees. Is it possible to be allergic to trees thus allergic to paper? Is there a doctor amongst you all, and if so, what can I do about this? Thank you.
  • You can be allergic to anything. Even moths.
  • Actually, many people who are allergic to paper have dust mite allergy. Get allergy tested asap.
  • Sure. All an allergy is, is the body reacting aggressivly to to something that is not a threat to the body. So if you have an adverse reaction to anything from wheat to paper to peanuts, it is possible.
  • I too have this problem. It is really debilitating because I can't read stuff! It has made me so miserable. Some brand new books are ok, but most books make me crazy itchy when I touch them. And the longer I read them the worse it gets. I hate it! I bought the kindle ereader because I really want ebooks to take off so I can read again. It is good, but most of the books I want to read are not available on it yet. Also, it doesn't help with the problem of not being able to touch old papers I need to see. Life is all about paperwork - it is really hard when you are allergic to something so necessary. Also, I am allergic to old clothes and blankets. If it hasn't been washed in the last few days, I get crazy itchy when I touch it. This sux too because if it's suddenly a warm day I can't wear any clothes in the back of my closet until I've washed them. I've gotten used to it, but I totally sympathize with all of you who have similar problems.
  • soitenly.
  • When I worked with papers in an office years ago, I was having a problem with my sinuses. I would get pressure, but not congestion and also a dizzy feeling. I went to the doctors- no one really knew the answer until I went to an allergist. He found out that I had an allergy to dust mites. He told me dust mites are in papers. I was working with a lot of paperwork. I left my job to have my daughter and be a stay at home mom. I felt a lot better. But then it started again...when I would get a cold or sinus congestion, I would get that pressure and dizziness again. Once I went to the doctors and got antibotics I felt better. But this continued..on and on. Now I was getting the dizziness everyday. I was told by the ears, nose and throat doctor that I have benign postional vertigo. Finally I went to a neurologist and he sent me for all kinds of tests. Nothing is wrong with me. Thank God! But I still suffered from dizziness, and it gets worse when I have congestion in my sinuses. Now I am going for vestibular therapy (thanks to the neurologist) and I feel 50% better. But what do I do about my allergy to dust mites? Most times that is what sets the dizziness off. I work at a school and I work with papers. I love my job but what can I do to avoid getting a reaction from the paperwork? Dust mites are in papers!!!! The dust mites really don't bother me as much at home. I use my vacuum to dust (have a hepa-filter vacuum. I have also been wearing dust masks when I clean and etc. Can anybody relate? I feel like I am the only person in the world with this weird problem. Any suggestions? I don't want to leave my job.
