Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a medical condition which can be defined as the inability to develop an erection or sustain it during sexual intercourse. Prostate cancer is not a cause for ED, but its treatment can be. When prostate cancer is treated through surgery, the prostate gland is removed from the patient’s body. This surgery might involve cutting of nerves that enable an erection. However, the severity of ED varies depending on the nature of the surgery and the stage to which the cancer has advanced. Consult your family doctor for his advice. He may refer you to a urologist. The nature of ED can vary from person to person. A patient can face problem in developing an ejaculation or sustaining it. He can have problems with orgasm or face a lack of sexual desire. Discuss your problem and medical history with him, including information about your sex-life. Tell him about any other conditions or addictions that you might be suffering from. All this information, coupled with a thorough physical examination, will help him understand the severity of your case and choose the right treatment. ED can be cured through oral medication like Viagra, Levitra or Cialis. Intracavernous injections (injections into the penis) and vacuum therapy are also used to increase blood circulation in the penis and develop erection. In some cases doctors may also recommend penile implants. All these treatments have their own benefits and side effects. Also, they need to be considered in a specific order. For example, penile implants, though the only permanent solution for ED, are taken into consideration only when non-surgical methods have failed. This is because they put the patient at a high risk of developing infection. And the cost of curing the infection can be more than the cost of the implant. They can also be considered if the patient has been suffering from ED for over a year after the surgery.
