  • Are you one of those who like to experiment with machines, nuts and bolts to repair small engine components, electrical circuits, etc.? If yes, with a little more proficiency you can start a small engine repairing business and make huge profits. Before planning to start the business, learn the basic techniques to repair and troubleshoot engine components, ignition systems, disassemble and restore different stroke engines including two-stroke, three-stroke and four-stroke engines. Professional training will improve your skills as well as provide you with certification in small business repair. Certification will add to your credentials and increase your customers’ confidence on your business. Next, estimate all the expenses. Breakdown the expenses into advertising, services, automobiles, commissions, equipment rentals, cost of tools, repairs, maintenance, taxes, etc. Determine what percentage of the total expenses is being consumed by each individual expense. Accordingly make a business plan and incorporate in it the objectives, goals, marketing and financial strategies of the business. Determine the expected earnings for the first year and approach a bank or a loan lender to avail necessary finance in case you run short of funds. To get a better idea about this business, you can search online or ask people in the same industry. You can also contact the business associations in your state to get estimates of the proprietary earnings in the same business. Contact the local, county or state licensing agency to know the formalities to be met to secure a license for your business. Fill up the forms, attach necessary documents, get the license and permits, register your business with the local government and get started. Buy the best quality tools for your business such as ring compressors, torque wrench, snap ring pliers, flywheel puller, flywheel holder, thread insert refill, multi tire changer, etc. You can buy them online or from local stores specializing in engine repair tools. Market your business well through hoardings, posters, advertisements in local newspapers or cable channels.
  • How to start a small egine repair business? Well, that depends. How skilled are you at doing this type of work already? If you have skill in the area, then the best way (which I did) was to first get certified by EETC in 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines. $45.00 test that you can take and get a cool certificate and patch you know. Second, get a business license and start advertising on Craigslist for your work. You'll be surprised how many people will call. I started out in my garage, then built a small 18' x 24' building to do the work in. After you start getting customers, offer discounts for referrals. People for some reason love that, you know? Also, as I did, go to the local dump and pick up free mowers and things, fix them, then offer them for sale at your "outdoor power equipment" Saturday morning yard sale. Even offer loaner stuff that you find and fix to customers while you have their machines. I did this, and built a ridiculously loyal customer base within a year. They just thought it was so nice that they could leave their mower with me to fix, and take home a loaner. Just to give you an idea on the profit, I made an extra $30,000 the second year in addition to my engineer salary. Not bad, and honestly, if I actually put money into REAL advertising, I probably could make $80,000 a year with a little effort. So, I say "go for it". The small business owner is the engine which drives America's economy, and we need more of them to "bring the work back home to the USA". Good luck.
