The "popping" noise is very likely that your brake calipers are sticking in the 'applied' position because of corrosion on the caliper slides (Miatas are known for this).
This *may* also explain why your brake fluid keeps getting low. If the calipers are sticking in the "applied" position, then the brake pads are wearing very quickly. As the pads wear, the caliper pistons have to move further out in their bores, fluid takes up the space behind them and the fluid level in the reservoir drops.
I STRONGLY recommend that you have your brakes inspected and, if the pads are worn, have them replaced along with the caliper slide bolts (This problem is especially common on the rear brakes).
