Prescriptions are supposed to be drugs that are too dangerous/addicting for the public to handle unless they are under a doctors direction. OTC drugs are supposed to be less dangerous, and the public is supposed to be able to know how much to take. However, a lot of people overdose on Ibuprofen (advil), as well as apirin and Acetaminophen (Tylenol/Motrin), and many are addicted to prescription drugs. So the method doesn't seem to be working all that well. Especially since many doctors will hand out prescriptions for lortab, percocet, etc. without a second thought. And some people will pop 6 Ibuprofen without a second thought, though they may be causing serious damage to their stomach.

in many cases the difference is in how much the drug companies stand to make each way.
