I can say that, in my life, my spouse is in Celexa and it seems to me that it reduces inhibitions and allows you to cope with things that you could otherwise get all upset about. This can be good to a point, but I warn anyone, most any of the new antidepressants do this and they really let the person dettach from everything. Let go of everything. They can even let go of their spouse and maybe do new things that had not been able to do. Like not care what anyone thinks about them all of a sudden. They can live a seemingly lawless or unregulated life. Suddenly a good wife that was severely depressed can suddenly wake with an unfaithful agenda. To the dismay of her entire family. Then they might have such inner remorse that they want to harm themselves. They are wonder drugs...they can reduce or eliminate depression, but in doing so, they make you a new person that feels that you have to answer to no one and that may leave you alone in the end. My wife has been on most all of the top SSRI type anti-depressants and others of that nature, celexa has given her the best mood, but she is now taking the highest risks. I hope our family can hold together while she tries to find herself.
Celexa, otherwise known as citalopram and used to treat depression, may alter blood pressure causing it shoot up or fall down. Further, celexa can result in difficult breathing, irregular heartbeat, shivering, fever and/or allergy in form of inflammation of the face, lips or tongue. In case of any of these side effects, patients are advised to immediately stop taking celexa and consult their doctor.
Other side effects include nausea, sleeplessness, drowsiness, impotence, decreased libido particularly among men, anxiety, nervousness, headache, altered weight, dry mouth, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Patients experiencing any of these symptoms while taking celexa can continue taking the medication but need to discuss the situation with their doctors.
A key behavioral change observed in patients taking celexa is increased suicidal tendency, especially among 18 years old or younger. It happens when patients start taking the medicine or when its doses are changed. Family members and friends therefore need to support the patients and observe them for panic attacks, enhanced restlessness, hostile behavior, mania and impulsiveness. Consult with your doctor if symptoms worsen.
