Why is a preview/advertisement for a movie called a "trailer"?

    I thought because intially they were played after movies so they "trailed" the feature, therefore "trailers"..

    i have often wondered the same thing. a trailer is usually something behind that is pulled. makes zero sense to me.

    what i hate about movie trailers is sometimes they contain parts that never made it in the actual film and it makes the film look more exciting than it really is.

    i went to go ask this question and saw that it was already posted...I wonder if it raelly is because they once trailed the movie rather than before, like the do now

    The term "trailer" comes from their having originally been shown at the end of a film programme.[1] That practice did not last long, because patrons tended to leave the theater after the films ended, but the name has stuck. Trailers are now shown before the film
