I put in a windows 98 startup disk in my computer and booted it into DOS. When I type in 'setup' or 'setup.exe' it says 'program cannot be run in DOS mode'. How can I use my startup disk?

Sounds strange, doesn't sound like a 98 startup disk to me. Windows 98 startup disk is a 1.44MB floppy disk. If you can boot Windows 98 I would make a new one if I were you.

You dont't say whether the start-up disc is a CD or a 1.44 MB Floppy.

If its a Floppy, just let the computer boot from it automatically. ( insert the Floppy, then start the computer).

If it's a CD, you need to have your computer boot from the CD Drive.

To do this , change the BIOS settings so that the computer boots from the CD Drive and not the Hard Drive

The start up disc allows you to get in to the dos mode so you can load the drivers you need to run the Win98 setup disc. Once the driver is loaded remove the startup disc and reboot with the Win98 disc in the tray. Everything else should be automatic.
