In bowling, what is a kingpin and how did it get its name?

The kingpin is the pin at the front of the deck, the one you usually need to hit in order to get a strike. I'm only speculating on the origin but the fact that that is the front pin and that's the pin you hit for a strike then that could be the reason for its name!

The Kingpin is a term referring to the 5-pin as it is protected by the surrounding pins like a King is protected by his knights..
