The current president has trouble with verbal communication skills
let alone writing a speech that's worth listening to.

One must learn how to write first before an attempt is made at speech writing.

Edit: I often wonder how he made it through high-school.

Speech writing is a tough job. The connotations of a single word might become provocation for an international dispute. For this reason, researching for and writing presidential speeches is a full time job - for more than one person. Seeing as the President has a lot of other responsibilities, and might not have been elected on the basis of his speech writing skills, he simply does not have that kind of time to devote to the many speeches he must give. That goes for any U.S. president.

Presidents don't have time to write their own speeches because their agenda is full of meetings, public appearances and travel. Also, presidents can't be experts on every single thing they have to comment on. Speech writers have to check their work for conformance to law and policy, and consistency to official government position (or lack of position) on the subject at hand.

Because he's a President, not a speech writer. Something about the dozens of briefings, meetings with the press, Congress, schools, the military, foreign leaders, etc. that he must attend to.

It's important to note that some presidents have (and continue) to write at least -some- of their own speeches - President Clinton wrote about half of his major speeches, and most presidents of the twentieth century have, at the very least, reviewed the text of all speeches written for them, frequently making edits along the way.

Incidentally, the law requires that the President of the United States must draft his own State of the Union Speech - though this is frequently edited by speechwriters. In the nineteenth century, presidents were expected to write every word. Thomas Jefferson, for example, who was terrified of public speaking, wrote all of his own speeches (including State of the Union addresses), but had many "read aloud" by friends of the administration.

I never knew the US president never wrote his own speeches, but I should have known that none of them do. I wonder who does write a presidents speech. I feel that if you work for the government or as the president you can do whatever you want. It is sad that the US presidents can't write their own speeches. I wonder if they even have a say in what they will say on TV or the newspaper, etc. I wonder if what we haer from the president is really the truth or if someone told him to say what he said.

It's ok for president Obama to do it. But it wasn't ok for any Republican president to do it.
