When you clean the tank, you should do it often by replacing about 20% of the water and spot cleaning around the tank. THAT'S ALL. You need to leave to majority of the water in there, you need to keep the gravel wet at all times and you need to treat water you put into the tank with a water conditioner like AQUAPLUS and also you need to put live bacteria in the water as well (a product like cycle). If your ammonia is high, your entire nitrate cycle is F'ed, you need to get the bacterial cycle back on track, If you are using an out-of-tank filter, take the ammonia removing part out and replace it with another sponge like insert (not carbon). This will help get the approprite levels, ammonia remover just causes your tank to constantly try to catch up with nitrates.

Without knowing more about your set up and specific fish, this is all I can say to help. Good luck!

You need to get a chemical testing kit from the pet store/fish store. If you take away too much water/balance of the tank this can happen. But all species of fish are different. Make sure there is no visible fish food/waste. You should never change more than 1/4 of the water a week. if it's severelly polluted then maybe 1/2. But must keep the water balanced & feed accordingly to the species. I hope this helps you. Or speak with a fish store specialist some one that has a clue

Thank you for your knowledge. I know now that I've completely screwed up by over-cleaning everything. I have a 30 gallon hexagon shaped tank with a Rena xp1 filter sytem. The only fish surviving now are 3 Gouramis and a sunrise Molly. I tried ammonia clear tablets and added stresszyme and a bacteria supplement, plus a live plant. The water smells like a hair salon and has been extremely cloudy. Do you think that further water changes would help or hurt? My gouramis have been with me from the start and I would be heartbroken if they die too)-:
