Why doesn't Jack in the Box have operations anywhere east of the West coast?

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm in South Carolina, about as far east of the West Coast as you can get on dry land, and Jack in the Box has been quite successful here for several years My apologies, Schultz. I can see that my answer could be taken as demeaning or insulting. I assure you it wasn't intentional. I should have looked at this first: the location map from their website bears out your observation. They are huge in California, but sparse or non-existent between the Rockies and Appalachians, except for Texas. One possible reason is the lack of approved suppliers in that region. Fast food franchisees MUST follow the corporate line on approved food suppliers and material standards to their restaurants. This is done to ensure a consistent product across the country. Many such rules are written to force the franchisee to order his goods only from the corporate-owned supplier but crafted in a way that is not obvious to the franchise buyer. An example could be "Use only USDA Select ground beef with a uncooked fat content no lower than 77.2% or greater than 78.3%, a moisture content no less than 88% and preformed into patties with a 6" diameter and 3/11" thickness (uncooked) resulting in a cooked product that is no smaller than 4.75" in diameter and 2/11" in thickness." Corporate has already done the serious grunt work figuring out how to mass produce meat patties like I described and no local supplier is going to jump those hoops to sell even 200 lbs a day of ground beef to a franchisee.

THEY USED TO BE ALL OVER THE UPPER EAST COAST WHEN I WAS A KID (20 YRS AGO OR SO!!). THEN THEY ALL DISAPPEARD. THERE WERE RUMORS ABOUT PROBLEMS W/ AN E COLI CASE...BUT WHATEVER THE REASON WE SURE MISS THEM. WHENEVER I VISIT VEGAS OF THE CAROLINAS I GO STRAIGHT TO JITB. A FEW YEARS BACK BURGER KING HAD TACOS THAT TASTED EXACTLY LIKE JITB...WE THOUGHT MAYBE THEY WERE TESTING THE MARKET BUT THEY DID LITTLE ADVERTSING AND THEY DIDNT LAST LONG...SAD....WISH THEYD TRY THE MARKET AGAIN.

maybe the other regions are outside the box. how can a jack in the box operate outside of the box? it just doesn't make sense.
