  • It's very difficult, I suppose all you can do is put yourself into their shoes and hope that if the tables were turned and it was you that couldn't rationalize, then other people would have compassion and treat you kindly.
  • Sheepingly -- Is it possible the parent you describe has depression? I'm dealing with a similar situation myself. One of the symptoms of depression, particularly in older people, is a state called psuedodementia wherein their ability to remember things and process information in a rational manner is impaired. I recommend you try to get this person to both a doctor and a mental health professional for some evaluation. If he/she refuses, there is not much you can do.
