USB1 and 2 may have different speeds. Your external hardrive may only be compatable with the faster or slower speeds. Make sure all the drivers are up to date, and check out the speed of the ports.

What version of Windows are you running? USB drives don't always work on any version of Windows older than XP.

A USB2 PCI card for your older computer wouldn't be that expensive, if you have an open PCI slot. It sounds like your drive just isn't backward-compatible with USB1.
