sunlight glare on the road? depends on how long the line was double yellow, and the weather conditions at that time of day
-
Be more specific. For what I'm interpreting your question to ask: Stare at the white line on the right side of the road. Just don't start drifting too far that way.
-
I think you are asking what is a good reason to say for driving left of the Double yellow...If I am correct then the answer is simple...tell the truth....

You live in the UK

You shouldn't be on that side of the road except in an emergency. To avoid an animal, obstruction in the road (truck retread, for instance), pothole, etc. which would otherwise threaten your ability to maintain control of the vehicle.

Not being drunk

Pleading insanity............
-
You were drunk and just THOUGHT you were seeing double.
-
As you can tell by the other answers, there is really no justifiable excuse for driving across a double yellow line. Its there for a reason and passing on a double yellow line is sure suicide for all motorist surrounding you.

I have a few as I have done so MANY times recently. 1) Construction zone 2) Road gone - we've had flooding issues 3) Large animal - hitting a moose will not only break your car, it'll annoy the moose. 4) Trooper standing in the travel lane talking with another motorist - Cops don't like being clipped by cars yet our roads lack shoulders. You can't avoid them without crossing the line. 5) Snowplows haven't come yet - If you can't see the road period....

I swear that bicyclist was driving too far into the road, I had to veer left or I surely would have hit him. Officer: there was no bicyclist. Really!!!He was there just a minute ago. He must have turned or something. I was just trying to be safe.
