What are the words from at the beginning of Evanescence's song "Understanding". What do they mean? ("You hold the answers deep within your own mind... But the imprint is always there...")

  • It is about repressing unpleasant memories.
For example, many people who are sexually abused, choose to "forget" this memory, though its just been shoved to a corner of their mind until they are able to handle it, or something triggers recognition.

I think the part "you hold the answers deep within your own mind" I believe that is part of the song, because sometimes the past experiences that we have chosen to "forget" still affect us in some way. For example, a child is molested in a bathroom, so they refuse to go into a public bathroom unless they are absolutely sure they are alone. At first glance this fear seems to have no basis, but after the child realizes what happened to them, it makes sense. This is like the answer in the song.
