My Xbox freezes at the logo, making a "tink tink tink" sound. The power light turns red, says it needs to be serviced, but displays no error code. What's wrong?

Yes the problem IS the hard drive. Micro$haft can replace the drive, but make sure you have not opened the unit, nor lost any feet, nor had either of the silver stickers on the bottem gotten torn. They will turn away the X-Box and say that they don't work on units that have been tampered with.

The alternitive is to buy a new Motherboard & Hard Drive combo. The reason for this is because MS used a little known feature in all hard drive that cause the drive to be locked. The only way to unlock the drive is to have the original key. The key is built into the firmware of the board. So if you have a bad hard drive in one unit, and a bad mother board in another, you CAN NOT just swap them and it work.

The alternative is to be VERY handy with a soldering iron and move one little eeprom from the dead board (along with the matching hard drive) to the working board. This takes a lot of skill. I've done several of these. Saves the person a butt load of money. One thing about this, make sure you're using the same series of X-Box. There are 5 of them, if I remember right. The only way to be sure, is to find someone local that can do this.

I have had the same problem myself. The "tink tink tink" sound is most likely the hard drive inside your Xbox malfunctioning. The only way to fix it without modding your Xbox would be to call Microsoft (1-800-My-Xbox) and ask for a repair. It isnt a complicated problem and they should be able to fix it just by replacing the drive, but the worst part is that you will lose all of your data, music, saved games, or anything else that you have on the Xbox hard drive.
