I would say that I'm naturally a good speller. Not to mention I have tendencies of OCD. Everything has to be punctually and grammatically correct, otherwise it bothers me. If I don't know for certain that a word is spelled correctly, I look it up. (Internet is VERY helpful for this. I love it.) It makes me feel kind of smart. Lol. On the other hand, when I'm talking to someone through an instant messenger and they use bad grammar and spelling, it bothers me. So sometimes it is a burden!

I am a good speller. I learned English as a Second Language. I always found that proper spelling is very important. It makes you look good and educated. I find very bad spelling as something disrespectful to those being addressed.

I'm a good speller, but I tend to get tripped up sometimes when I try to type too fast. Good news is, everyone spells well these days. Thank you Spell Check!

I am not the best speller and it irritates me to no end! I often recognize a misspelled word due to my voracious reading habit...but am not always the best at figuring out how to correct it!

Good spellers are VISUAL learners. When you ask them to spell a word they either see it in their head (watch their eyes after you ask them to spell something) or they try to "write" it somehow....even in the air if they have to. It really has little to do with intelligence. And yes, I am a good speller. It is helpful, but doesn't make me smarter than someone who strugles with it.

I have always been adept at spelling.

I believe it comes from learning to read at a young age (my first book was The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, at age four) and learning through Phonics--which, oddly enough, isn't taught at many schools in the South. People wonder why over 50% of our third graders failed the standardized tests? They can't bloody read!!

I have labeled myself a "visual speller" becuase I never sound out words, I just remember the way they look. I just glance and I remember the word! It's that simple!

I spell extremely well in English and several other languages (but not Hebrew because Hebrew has six pairs of letters that sound exactly the same, argh) and think it just comes from the proper emphasis in grammar school, which I attended from 1956 to 1964. We had phonics the first two years and spelling tests every single morning for the next six. It is a very useful skill, but I know many people who are more intelligent than I am and yet spell worse. It never occurred to me to ask any of them how much emphasis spelling got in their schools.

Frustrated that I can't overlook incorrect spelling!

There are TYPOS that spell checkers miss [he want to the zoo], there are GRAMMATICAL ERRORS [there vs. they're], there is LAZINESS [why bother to look up zeebra?] , there is "FORGETFULNESS" [continuing to use your vs. you're after being told repeatedly - or is this passive aggressive behaviour?], and there is HASTE [typing my own name incorrectly while in a hurry!].

Whether learning styles, phonics, nature vs. nurture, it all comes down to CARING! I care, but find many people simply don't care if something's misspelled.

I've always been a pretty good speller since I was very young. I began to learn English when I was around 6 years old (Spanish is my first language).
In fact, now that I think about it I won the spelling bee in like 5th grade! =)

I spell very well, but my brain moves faster than my hands, so my handwriting is for the birds, unless I slow down and think about it, and then I get frustrated.

I spell very well, but I would argue that it wasn't "effortlessly". It comes easily to me now, but only because it was drilled into me in school as well as my mother's being a stickler for spelling and grammar. My mom was a compulsive proofreader (and now so am I) who used to circle all the errors in my grade school's newsletter for parents and make me bring it back to the school secretary to make a point. After having errors pointed out constantly for years, and being made to figure out the correct spelling myself, it became automatic.

I have to say I'm a great speller and I'm intelligent enough to use a dictionary when I'm not sure how to spell a word.

I'm typically a good speller with, (usually) good grammar. I tend to think that if you can't communicate properly, what the hell CAN you do?!

I believe that my spelling is reasonably good. Although it has deteriorated since I started using the computer.

Not a very good excuse but the only one I have at present.

I've been a good speller since grade school. My elementary school emphasized spelling. Then again, everyone in my family has been a good speller. Good spelling is beginning to be a lost art.

I am very paticular about watching my spelling. Bad spelling just bugs me, especially when it comes from me. But you are right, some very intelligent people are bad spellers. I think a lot of that has to do with dyslexia not being diagnosed as often as it should.
