  • Sure, if you want to. If you feel that you need their permission, then get it. A fence is considered duel property of both lot owners on either side of it.
  • Wouldn't it be more expedient to discuss this with your neighbor?
  • If the fence is in the ground on your neighbor's property, you need their permission to put something on it. Even if it somehow was placed directly on the line separating your properties it belongs to them if they purchased it. The only control you have is to make them move it to their property. I would ask my neighbor if they mind before I tried to hang anything from it. It might even help if you sweeten the deal and offer them a hanging basket as a gift of peace.
  • Not if they object to it. The fence is, after all, their property. Ask them and see if they'd mind.
  • My husband and i have just spent £700 on new fencing for the garden my husband spent 2 whle days putting it up the day after the neighbour knocked and asked where we were going to cut the posts down to when asked why he said we have brought 5 hanging baskets to hang on it. I couldnt believe it the cenment hadnt even set and they didnt even ask!!! I texted the wife and asked very polity not to hang them on thereas i was worried the weight my damage the fence they didnt speak to us for 6 weeks we have just got back from holiday to find the baskets hung on the fence i am so angry what should i do!!
  • My neighbour attached loads of trellis to the other side of our fence - we were furious as the plants he grew up it were heavy and putting strain on the fence and were growing over the top and taking over. I cut back everything that came over and when we were ready to change the fence we just ripped it out - trellis, planes and all. When he complained we said we were sorry but it was our fence and we didn't think he would be stupid enough to attach things to it without asking! I don't think you should hang anything without speaking to your neighbour the trouble it can cause is completely out of perspective with a few plants.
  • I am currently faced with the problem of neighbor hanging trashy things on my fence without permission. We just had a new fence erected after hurricane Gustav and now the neighbors in the trailer park next door have taken it upon themselves to hang a ugly birdhouse a ladder and are also laying trash against it. This will be handled this week. No More ... this is disrepectful.
  • I had a neighbor come onto my property and put up a beware of dog sign on their fence, only thing is I don't want to look at signs in my back yard so I tore it off and threw it back over in their yard,, then I told them if they start playing games they will get some back; They don't know me, but you can bet they better keep me happy else I will have lots and lots of teenagers over every weekend lol,
  • With their permission. This is their fence so it needs to be on their side of the property line. Therefore, anything you do with/to it needs to be with permission. If they do not give it, nothing prevents you from planting posts next to the fence, on your side of the line, and putting a basket on each post. You probably will have a better base than if you just hang it on a fence anyway.
