  • Oh my! I really thought this one had been debunked a long time ago. (http://www.snopes.com/religion/sheet.htm) In fact, an Orthodox couple may not have anything interfere between them (including any type of clothing) during intercourse. In the context of marriage, the sexual union is viewed by Judaism as one of the most holy of human experiences. The prototype human being is described in the Torah as male AND female (Genesis 1:27). That's the verse that describes us as created in the Divine image. Jewish mysticism understands that the union of male and female as "one flesh", without anything between them (Genesis 2:24) is potentially a re-creation of that prototype human form, which is "in the Divine image". (I say potentially, because if a couple is in disharmony, intercourse will not magically transform them into this special unit.) Where did the hole in the sheet idea come from? I have a suspicion that someone once saw their Jewish neighbor’s “Talit katan” hanging on the line and couldn’t imagine what it could be for… (A Talit katan is a square piece of cloth with a hole in the middle (to put your head through) and tassles on all four sides. A man wears it under his shirt.)
