It sounds like you are overfeeding. Cut back. If you are feeding goldfish pellets, make sure they are size appropriate for your fish to swallow whole and don't feed more than your fish can consume in 30 seconds. Otherwise, they will suck on the pellets, break them down, and then spit out the excess. The excess will fall to the gravel bed below and cause a bacterial bloom, which is different than a standard algae bloom due to excessive light or nitrates.
Someone suggested an automatic feeder. Unless you keep them very clean and dry, they can attract bugs such as roaches!!! They are good however in the short term if you are on vacation or willing to maintain them.
I wouldn't suggest snails either. Other than gold rams, they reproduce at a rapid rate and can clog your filtration.
I don't like live plants either. Their roots can get tangled in your undergravel filter (assuming you have one).
how big are your goldfish.
the fish are adapted to your tank and it depends how much you feed them too. it would help if you got 2 slugs to put in. also it would help to get a bigger filter or a automatic fish feeder to feed the approiate amount because it settels at the bottem of the tank and gets it dirty and how much the "bathroom"

turn your air filters up or check they are not blocked. buy some plants aswell
maybe you should try to get these snails like the pointy kind and put them in the tank. they will eat the the junk at the sides and at the bottom of the tank. so they are bottom feeders. you should know that the snails have babies if they think there is enough food for their young. the gold fish don't eat the snails
I just heard someone say that algae is beautiful. Is this true or are they just out of their mind or what?

The pond behind my work has 5 alligators in it. Lately a company has been going out there & spraying a chemical to kill the plant life & algae in the water. Is this harmful to the gators & other wildlife that live by the pond?

My fish tank goes green quicker than it used to. We got the two pretty good sized goldfish in the fall and the water didn't get really green until 2 1/2 weeks. Now we have to change the water every week if we want to see the fish. Whats happening?

I have a 40 gal tank. I moved it to a spot that gets morning indirect sun light. The problem isn't surface algae, but free floating algae. The water is green, barely translucent. I have tried to change the water but to no effect. What can I do?
