I used to be a very average player. Recently I purchased my own pool table, and received a great instructional DVD with the table. One of the lessons the DVD taught me, was to keep as still as possible just before shooting that shot... it's something very basic that most players don't do. The DVD also taught me how to determine which was my dominant eye, and how to use the dominant eye to sight down the cue stick... and a lot of basic information about how to shoot angle shots. I'm now one of the better players in my pool league. Based on my experience I'd recommend you get a similar instructional DVD. The one I've got is called Perfect Aim (http://www.perfectaimbilliards.com).

Which arm are you talking about? Stroking arm? Eliminate extraneous movement by learning the movement. Use soft shots that allow you to concentrate on not moving anything but the elbow. Many new players flinch when they hit the ball with speed, ruining chances of hitting the cue ball where they need to hit it. I recommend keeping the wrist out of the equation due to the fact that it is another variable that decreases chances of hitting the cue ball accurately. THAT is what makes the ball spin. Try to eliminate as many variables from your technique and game as you can. Consistency will improve as you get rid of extra movement.

I recommend a relaxed shooting fore arm. It allows for better wrist movement. If you are shooting from the elbow, your wrist is more important in keeping the slop out of your shot.
