How does a drug test work - e.g for PCP - does the test identify the actual substance in the bloodstream or does it identify chemical changes associated with the affect the drug has on the body?

Some tests detect the presence of the actual drug, For example tetra-hydra-cannibinol (Marijuana) is detected in blood, urine, hair etc. Cocaine is excreted in the urine primarily as benzoylecgonine, a Metabolised by product of cocaine (I think). PCP like THC, is stored in fatty tissue, and is slowly released in to he bloodstream where it can be detected. Depending on the testing procedure, and the drug being tested, The drug itself or byproducts/effects can be detected to form a conclusion.
