Every cat is different, but if your cat is anything like mine, she/he is extremely curious and HAS to know what's going on. All the time. Maybe there's something going on outside, maybe the cat is waiting until something's going on. If there's a slight chance of a bird flying by, a car passing, a flower/leaf moving...the cat HAS to be informed! LOL. I'm not completely sure if this has more to do with cats wanting to survey their territory, or curiosity. So, without a more scientific term to help you out, your cat is being a cat.

I hope this contributes a little to understand cat's behavior:

House (domestic) cats are after all felines, more closely related to major felines (tigers, lions, jaguars, etc) than more people would think. So they are after all "hunters".

I used to had several cats at home when a child, and I'll never forget watching one of the cats in the backyard (from behind the curtains) for about 3 hours. There he was absolutely immobile and flat on the ground, not moving even a single hair, watching pigeons on the trees. After almost 3 hours one of the pigeons flew down to the garden, and the cat as stealthly as you can imagine started crouching inch by inch. When the pigeon notice him, it was simply to late, the cat made a fast-huge leap and caught him on the air, a few inches above the ground.

So, as somebody answered before, this long staring on the window, has to do with curiosity but also with their hunting instinct, surveying what's going on, but mainly who (man or animal) is going on.

Depending on where you live, I'd say birds! My cats do the same thing, and the biggest windows in our home have bird feeders right outside of them. Whenever the cats sneak outside, they always run straight to the place they look when they're staring out the window--always the bird feeder :)

My cat sits and stares out the window looking for other cats, dogs, and birds. If he spots one going across the yard he will go from window to window following it. Once the animal is out of sight he will sit at the last window he saw it from for up to 30 minutes. I guess he is hoping it will come back.
