G'day sleidman, Thank you for your question. They did what they still do. Brew beer. According to Wikipedia, Sir Hugh Beaver who was the chair of Guinness got into an argument about the fastest game bird in 1951. He couldn't find an answer and it occurred to him that there were lots of pub disputes on issues like that and that a reference book on world records would be popular in pubs. He commissioned the McWhirter brothers to put together a book. When they finished it in 1955, the book became a worldwide hit - indeed, it is now the world record holder of the best selling copyrighted book. Beer. Guinness is good for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness_(Bier) There could be also a connection to Sir Alec Guinness: "Reports in an Irish tabloid claim that Sir Alec was the illegitimate son of one of the real Guinness family." "The truth may now never be known?" http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alec_Guinness http://www.showbizireland.com/news/august00/21-guinness01.shtml
