When you buy a house you can hire someone to look at it for problem areas. Is there people out there that also do this for land purchases? I am looking to buy land in Nothern Illinois but don't want to buy some bad land.

You may want to contact the Department of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service (USDA.gov). They used to provide soil evaluation for free and will be a useful resource if only for referrals. They can give you a good sense of the economics of the land you are looking at. Good luck!
