US soldiers have SGLI, Servicemans Group Life Insurance, which is for $250,000. If the foolish soldier desires, he/she can waive that benefit and get about $10 extra in pay each month. SGLI is issued by the government and applies to acts of war as well as other accidental deaths. SGLI is convertible to VGLI (Veterans Group Life Insurance) at retirement.

The truth is, yes we have life insurance (SGLI) for 450,000 dollars. Yes we can get outside life insurance for upto 1,000,000 dollars before age 35. 500,000 after that. You are even insured while you are retired from service. They even have a new thing called FSGLI for your family members. They are insured for 100,000 dollars for 6 dollars a month.

If you examine the small print on your life insurance, you will notice - in exclusions - 'acts of war'. So, I believe that excludes soldiers in a war zone. They can get insurance, but if killed while fighting a war, their beneficiaries cannot claim. If a soldier dies from illness, natural causes, MVA, then that counts, and their widows/mothers whomever named can claim. There is, however, a pension which, a widow can receive, as far as I know.
Recently, in Canada, it came to light that widows of soldiers killed in Afghanistan were unable to claim the life insurance on mortgages and so were losing their homes, if unable to keep up the payments. Once the media grabbed this, the Minister of Deense made some kind of move with the big banks, and this stipulation was overthrown.
    Good question, sloroller!

Yes, but some policies exclude war deaths. The US government provides an insurance-type death benefit for those killed in the line of duty.

They may also purchase their own personal policies just like anyone else does, but many of these commerical policies have serious restrictions and do not always pay benefits for "death by combat or hostile fire."
