  • I guess after a while, everyone looks like a criminal. Tell you what, I wouldn't want to do the job...
  • Part of the hiring process is the main question: what do you think about the phrase "to serve and protect"? The ones that laugh get hired and the ones that consider that as a serious question get passed over. The cops who think that profiling refers to people who aren't middle class or rich are all possible criminals are the ones that get hired.
  • They have to treat everyone that way. They have to always suspect anyone and everyone for commiting a crime; that's their job.
  • I think it has partly to do with being overly cautious. The one person they pull over for a routine traffic stop who seems harmless may be the one that whips out a pistol and blows them away. Because they can't risk letting their guard down, they may assume the worst about EVERYONE. Maybe some of them are jaded by daling wiith the worst side of humanity that they assume that ANYBODY is capable of ANYTHING. Combined with the inevitable feelings of futility (crime still exists, and is getting worse despite the efforts of our badge-toting friends) this can lead to disliking people in general, or a certain indifference/callousness in any dealings with others. This may make one feel that they are being treated as a criminal. There are other possible reasons too, but they vary from cop to cop. And not all cops do so; some actually treat people nicely until you give them reason to treat you like a perp.
  • Because people shoot at them..they don't know if the person sitting in a car when they pull them over has a gun and they have to assume they do until proven otherwise. They don't enjoy wearing those heavy bullet proof vest. I don't envy them but I admire them.
  • Because whole world is a suspect. The do not know what to expect when going over to talk with driver of car they just pulled over. They have to think about their safety.
  • I think this is an inaccurate generalization. However, if you mean: why do cops seem to be sceptical of people, it is because they want to make it home each night to their family.
  • I think that when they probably first start out they arent that way, but after years of dealing with the scum of the earth, i would probably get a little jaded . I mean , most ppl who arent doing anything wrong or breaking the law arent the ones that they come in contact with every day, it is the other type, the ones who might possible end thier life that day. I would not want to be an officer and i commend all of those who are brave enough to do it to protect ppl like me...
  • Because they have to in order to stay alive so they may return home to their loved ones.I apologize to you John and every other Law Inforcement officer doing one of the most dangerous and difficult jobs out there.I see now that my question may have been crude and disheartening and I hope you accept my apology.
  • I have been around for awhile now. I have had several encounters with local and state police. No officer has ever been disrespectful to me, even if I had done something wrong.( they disapproved of my driving habits when I was younger) If an officer approaches, and you seem defiant, or agitated you are likely to see another side. If stopped at night, it is a good idea to turn on the interior lights and put tinted windows down and keep your hands where the officer can see them. These guys get shot or shot at for nothing. If you can ease his mind even a little bit, it will lower the tension of the encounter. Don't be combative. He is paid to do his job and we expect him to do it.
  • I guess they're just being overly-cautious. They really should work on their people skills a little better though. A cop pulled over my husband today after he had worked for a 16 hour day...right in our driveway, because our blinker was out. It was 20 degrees outside, and that cop made him stand outside for 15 minutes freezing his butt off. Then he had the nerve to ask why there were pipes in the backseat...he obviously didn't look at my husband's shirt...he's a pipefitter, moron. He also asked if he had any warrants on him...my husband has never been to jail in his life. Then he was extremely rude to me as well. Ugh, kinda makes me want to become a cop, so I can be rude to the cops that are rude to me.
