In a mid-engine layout, how does the manual shift knob interact with the transmission when the transmission is attached to the back of the engine?

In most cars, the shift knob is nowhere near the transmission anyways. MR cars use the same types of shift linkages as a normal FWD car, though they route them differently due to the drivetrain layout.

most shifters are not mounted and routed directly into the tranny although atleast one is. the use cables and rods to transmitt the action to the desired location.
