Yes, as engines get older they need thicker oil to adjust for parts inside the engine wearing. There is no harm to your engine and the only thing NOT to do is mix the vesocity of oils. So if you add oil before your next change.... add 10-30w. Your car may begin to use oil if you return to using 5-20 as this is a very thin oil and may begin to seep past the rings that are wearing down normally and begin burning the oil.

No harm done. Go back to 5W20 on next oil change. I would also recommend going to a synthetic like Amsoil. I have 140000 on a Pontiac Grand Prix and use 5W30 Amsoil. I have done this for a number of years. I change only the oil filter, every 3 months or 3,000 miles and then add more oil.

Anyone having any issues with oil leaks on a 2004 Mazda 3, 2.3L? I just hit 50K and never had any issues however, I have some pretty big wet spots on my drive way, I am going to drop the oil change the filter and inspect the housing I just wanted to see if anyone had any other types of oil leak issues. Also how about the Alternator? My check engine light (alt light) came on but the car is running fine??? Dave
