  • I see where you are coming from. America is a big melting pot and we all should be able to keep our customs, language and what not. YET there should be some uniformity somewhere, so that we can communicate with each other and perform our jobs efficiently.

  • Your friend read a lot into it. A lot of people who go down this road of conversation have a rather ignorant cultural agenda. Chances are, your friend may have had to deal with people like this in the past with upsetting results.
  • How do you know that the waiter or waitress wasn't currently enrolled in a class to better his or her english? You don't just go from not knowing to knowing. There is that gray area in between.
  • If anyone is going to try to live and work anywhere, they should learn the native language. Communication is KEY to success in business. You said the right thing and your friend is just either feeling inadequate and therefore overly sensitive or is feeling just oh-so-PC (which I hate!) and therefore considers himself superior to those who actually have an opinion on anything. I'm with you. Learn the lingo or you'll really have a hard time.
