"Besides November, April is considered the best time to visit Japan, because in most regions of the country, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the weather is pleasantly mild. Domestic travel activity is increasing due to spring school holidays and the cherry blossom season." Source: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2273.html

Spring is a very beatiful time to visit Japan to see the Cherry Blossoms around the country. However, in Japan they say "Shokuyoku no Aki" or "Autumn (for) Appetite" as many delicious seasonal dishes are prepared at this time.

I went in May last year, and it was gorgeous! We went during Golden Week, just after the Sakura Festival (Or Cherry Blossom Festival), and it was just absolutely beautiful. The weather was mid. We weren't too hot, or too cold. It only rained once, but we were never too one or the other. I would say spring time, is the right season to go, because the temperatures are great and you can see the beautiful plants and flowers.
