The first answer is not entirely correct. The smallest dog recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Chihuahua (tea cup Chihuahua is not recognized by the AKC - it's just breeders breeding all of their smallest Chihuahua's and calling them tea cup Chihuahuas) and the Tallest dog recognized by the AKC is the Irish Wolfhound. There is no such thing as the heaviest, because owners could just overfeed and get the fattest/heaviest.

The English Mastiff actually is the heaviest breed recognized by the AKC. This is because the AKC provides a standard range for its breeds, and the Mastiff has the heaviest range. It’s got to be Chihuahua the smallest breed of dog in the world, it's the only "natural" toy breed. That means that the Chihuahua is naturally small and, unlike toy poodles and other small dogs, it hasn't been purposefully bred to be a smaller version of a larger breed. Wish you luck !!!!!!

I'll clarify a lot of these posts. Smallest dog: Currently noted and created, the smallest dog is a Chihuahua. However this breed of dog has been bread enough till its breed is about the same as buying a deformed, issue ridden dog. The Teacup Chihuahua has not been recognized by the AKC as of yet, and I sure hope they do not do so because it's promoting unhealthy pets with short lives. Before adopting one of these dogs (Teacup or Regular) researching the breeders are a #1 priority. Keep in mind, the smallest dogs don't live healthy lives because they have been overbread! Money can buy quality! There are many various "Teacup" dogs that can be small companions as well. The tallest dog to date is the Irish Wolfhound, however with certain exceptions the Great Dane is amongst the tallest as well, this all depends on your breeder, the parents history, etc. The tallest dog in the world is a Great Dane right now. Both make amazing pets! The heaviest dog is the English Mastiff, with exception to some Neapolitan, and Bull mastiffs who have come close. This once again relates back to your breeder and the history. But the Mastiff group you can always get a good size dog. English Mastiffs have both size, and height however.
