Theoretically, they could, but the conditions would have to be just right for that to happen. If you have a firewall separating you, have kept your OS updated, and have a functional anti-virus program running, that reduces most of the risk right there. But this is a scenario much less likely to occur these days as there are much easier ways to get into a person's computer - let the person do all the work. Phishing, sites seeded with malware, infected email attachments, scripts embedded in emails, these methods are much more efficient, because the perpetrator doesn't even have to do any work. They just wait for you to download the payload and the rest is history.

They can indeed, if u want to know more on how to do this, then please rmail, andy.plumpton@gmail.com I have 12 yrs exp in hacking and from this i have designed my own pregrams to prevent ay sprt of hacks and it works 100% i have tried this myself, I used another computer to hack my own and with the program i have created you just cannot hack, You have to know everything about hacking and how to put an end to it, it taken me 4 yrs to make my own program as it intails a lot of research...
