  • He was bisexual, but never came out publicly. Freddie had a girlfriend, Mary Austin, whom he was in a relationship with for six years until he told her about his sexuality. After the relationship was over they still remained close friends. Mary Austin often fronted as his girlfriend to the press. Though previously promiscuous, his last boyfriend, Jim Hutton, lived with him for the last eight years of his life, cared for him when he was ill and was with him at his bedside when he died. • I've heard people say he was gay and I've heard others say he was bisexual. Either way, he was quite the queer man (in a good way, of course!). He had a girlfriend named Mary Austin, so I'm guessing he was, in fact, bisexual. He talked about women in a lot of his songs, but then again gay men call each other "girls".
  • A lot of people have told me he was gay, but he did have a girlfriend. He also had a boyfriend, so he was bisexual. Sucks doesn't it?
  • In short, yes. Although he had a girl, Freddie was never sexually attracyed to ladies. I think Kenny Everett and Freddie really had something going.. Why else would he call the band Queen!?
  • Is this a rhetorical question? Farrokh Bulsara the most famous gay Zoroastrian ever. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury
  • I have never heard that he wasn't.
  • Yes, he was gay (also bisexual.) He died of AIDS.
  • Why does it matter? He was an incredible talent.
  • Is an inferno flaming?
  • Freddie sadly left us from AIDS complications. His sexual life was never of great interest to me. As an entertainer, he goes down as one of the best voices in modern music. His sexual preference is really a moot point now.
  • Yes, very. I met him in the Colherne in London once!
  • oh good gracious, next you people be will saying Liberace was gay !
  • Yes, and a fine performer and singer as well. He was the *straw that stirred the drink* of one of the greatest bands of all time.
  • Although Freddie hedonistically experimented with both sides of the coin, so to speak; and his companion for the last years of his life was a man, Jim Hutton; I believe the facts speak for themselves as to who Freddie's TRUE LOVE was! To Freddie, his friend, companion and lover for 21 years, Mary Austin was the true and lasting love of his life and for whom he also reportedly penned the song, "Love of My Life." He left over 50% of his estate to her, his mansion in London(worth over 4 million pounds), as well as 50% of any and all future royalties from his music. That's more than his family received, and Jim Hutton only received 500,000 pounds and some land in his native Ireland. Freddie thought of Mary Austin as his commonlaw wife, and often said she would always be his best friend. As confusing as his sexuality may have been, for all true Freddie Mercury fans, his sexual orientation matters none. It's simply all about the Man and his Music. The scope of his talent was vast and there's certainly a big hole in the music world since he's been gone. There will NEVER be another Freddie Mercury. I feel priviledged to have lived during his time; and the rest, is as they say, HISTORY.
