When television advertisers say that thier product is better than the leading brand, why is their product not the leading brand?

    There are many reasons why the best brand may not be the leading brand. The leading brand may be an old, established brand and have more "brand loyalty" among consumers, being used by their parents and even grandparents before them. The leading brand may have more effective advertising. It may be sold in more stores than any other brand, especially if it is older. It may have special deals with some stores to display it in a more prominant place than other brands. The leading brand may be cheaper. Finally, everyone has their own opinion about what exactly "better" means.
