I have a 1998 Motorhome that has a 1997 Ford 7.5 L engine (360)with about 115,000 miles. I am concerned about the timing belt breaking. Does this engine have a Chain or belt? Is this an Interference Engine? When should I have the belt (chain) replaced

It has a timing chain and it is not something people generally replace as a maintenance item. Also, it is a 460 not a 360

the above answerer is correct. also the 7.5L motor in a ford is a 460, not a 360. although ford did make a 360, they did not in 1998 or 1997...i believe they phased it out in the mid 70's.

The 7.5 has a timing chain, and is not an interference engine. Late '80s through mid '90s Ford V8s used a timing gear with nylon teeth that were prone to breaking. I believe that was sorted out before '97, however, at this point I would reccomend replacing the whole timing set. The timing gear teeth are still subject to wear, and the chain can certainly stretch. With 115,000 miles on, this job is due now.

The cost differential shouldn't be that much, since there is almost as much labor involved just doing the timing chain, and you'll probably find that all the parts together as a set is not much more than the cost of the chain alone. The cost will be much greater, however, if you let it go and it breaks while on the road, not to mention the frightening prospect of a roadside breadown.

While you're having that done, this would be a good time to have the water pump checked and/or replaced, since they will be right there. Don't forget about belts and hoses. If the old ones are in relatively decent shape, you should probably replace them anyway and keep the old parts as emergency spares.
