Here's what I think: "-is" is Lithuanian. "-off" is Russian. So Awetisoff is the name of someone from Lithuania in Russia. "-yan" is Armenian. So Awetisyan is someone from Lithuania in Armenia. Awetyan is just someone from Armenia. Awgust is Polish-Lithuanian, as it comes from the Ruthenian language, or Western Russian, language. I use "Polish-Lithuanian," however I am almost sure the name comes from Lithuania. It means "August." (as in Augustus) "-Off" means "son of." So, "son of August[us]."
