  • Over the counter is available for many former "prescription only" medications for acid reflul like Zantac...
  • I've had it too. First, get some Tums or Rolaids to do a quick settling of the acid. Get some Zantac 75(good call FreeRadical) and take them per instruction. One thing you do not want to do is take too many of anything. Stay seated, and if you need to lie down, stay on your right side. Sip some water. Try to relax.
  • First, do NOT take anything that is fizzy like Alka Selzer. It is a big irritant to acid stomachs, despite what they say. Nothing carbonated or effervescent!! Buy some over the counter Pepcid AC or Zantac and use as directed. I would also call your doctor and talk to him or her at least before your appointment and ask them how much of the medications based on your symptoms, history and all they tell you to take. Many people can take (if their doctor says they can) as much as 40-60mg of over the counter Pepcid AC a day, for example. But check with your doctor directly (or through his nurse by phone if you have to do it that way) before you take more than just the maximum dose as indicated on the box of Zantac or Pepcid. Also, eat bland food until then; low fat, low on the dairy and low on the sugar and spices. They are notorious for producing acid or irritating an already irritated stomach or esophagus.
  • Do you already avoid certain foods? if not stay away from anything acidic like tomatoes, citrus fruits, I also think bread can make acid reflux worse and there are also many other foods! You could also ask a pharmacist about any OTC pills you could take.
  • Never take Alka-Seltzer for heartburn. It will make it worse and can aggravate an ulcer. You can take Prilosec OTC or one of the other over the counter meds in the mean time and take Maylanta for break through heart burn.
  • It's probably a bit late now, but here are some things that have helped me with acid reflux (even though mine was never anywhere near as severe as what you are describing): * Do not lie down or sit. Stand or walk. (that obviously only applies when you're not trying to sleep - if sleeping, prop up the head so it is higher than the stomach) * Try sipping chamomile or fennel tea (lukewarm, never hot or cold) * Drink milk. Again not hot or cold, and best low-fat/skim. * You could also try the apple cider vinegar thing, it apparently has done wonders for many people. Personally, I am so repulsed by the smell of vinegar, I can't get myself to drink it. * Stay away from the Alka Seltzers!! Three packs in a day would give anyone acid reflux, even if they didn't have it before! • 2 words: Try Vinegar.
  • Well, I'm late in reading this but here is something that my own doctor ( who usually sneers at alternative medicine) told me to try........ Jump up and down. No kidding it kind of helps
  • One thing I found that works sometimes, (it tastes absolutely disgusting) is a tablespoon of baking soda in a glass of tepid-to-warm water. Baking soda neutralizes acid.
  • i have binary colic and that has escilated to causing gallbladder disease, the docors perscribed me some fancy medicine that costs alot and a couple months later i realized it was just maximum stength pepcid... "fantimodine 20 mg" is what the technical name is... but i promise itll work soooo much better!
  • I know it's olde skewl, but Tums is the best for me in a pinch. Mylanta also works just about as well. I've has it since 93 and been through the gammit of drugs both Rx and OTC. Got me 20mg of Aciphex now and it is hands down the best for me. Talk to your doc and whatever you end up with, push for at at least 6 one month refills at a time AND DON"T RUN OUT! O_o Hang in there.
  • Plain white rice.
  • Hi there,I suffer from horrendous heartburn,in an emergency I have cheap vanilla ice cream ,or a green apple ,Granny smith etc ,hope this helps
  • Milk is supposed to help or even water and baking soda(sounds gross but it can help) Also I had a prescription for med and the doc said if I just took a certain amount of OTC meds then they do the same thing, it's just convinient to put the dose in one pill. I have GERD and it works for me I hope you get to feeling better, and don't lay down it will make it feel like you are going to throw up. Good luck!
  • only home remedy for acid reflux that i have found that did a dang thing for me was an ebook i found online. i was skeptical cause i'm always worried those things are scams but it actually did the trick well worth the money http://www.remedyforacidreflux.net/
  • Milk always helps, if only briefly.
  • I'm very much in the same boat, the Protonix helps only so much, the TUMS usually help, but sometimes not. I am having such a problem right now; so I turned to my friend the internet...I found this website: http://www.susangaer.com/studentprojects/heartburn.htm and decided to try the gum remedy, it seems like the easiest and least gross. It's helping! I don't know why but I'm not complaining. The burn isn't gone, but its 90% reduced, enough so I think I can attempt to go to bed. Good Luck!!
  • It is very tough situation to have it that severely. Check out this website http://www.acidreluxremedytips.com and take a look at the ebook they promote on there. Amazing home remedy tips that can really make a difference. Those methods should clear up the problem. Otherwise you might have to go to hospital and see what they can do. Natural usually works better though. :) hope this helps
  • Call the doctor's office and ask them to telephone a refill authorization to your pharmacy. +5
