I thik it may be because of the time it opened. It was started in the early 60's when the new GATT agreement made available all sorts of goods from around the world, like Thailand and India and places in Europe that were not already selling to American markets. The goods came in crates and barrels becasue they were exported from distant lands. There is a similar beginning for Pier One, whihc also opened in 1962. I remeber the earliest Pier Ones and they were really just bare stockhouses with boxes and crates everywhere and some boxes would be opened so you could see inside. THey had goods from all over the world, lots of weird items like camel saddles and India beads.
