Yes. DUIs are taken very seriously and will be permanent on one's record. However, if you were to get the charge overturned or dropped (not likely) then it would be taken off your sheet.

Don't get another DUI because the 1st one is just a slap on the wrist. The real trouble comes with the 2nd and gets exponentially worse for each one there after. You need to stay DUI free for at least 10 years. After 10 years, the punishment for the 2nd DUI will be treated as if it was your first...

my sister lived in Ohio and got a DUI last year. She moved here in Los Angeles shortly after and applied for a license and did not note that she had a DUI EVER - wuddya know, the DMV did not have any DUI alerts on her, and now, she drives with a valid license with no DUI. It's like a fresh start for her. It's surprising because the people at the DMV are so thorough and smart and so on their toes about everything that goes on...

It varies from state to state ; BUT I think cali keeps them forever ... The best way to find out for sure is to just go ahead and call the DMV ...
