  • Yes, they changed the law recently.
  • The answer is NO. Canadians now need a passport if they fly into the US but not drive. I believe Canadians will require a passport in 2008 or 2009 in order to drive into the US, however the governments are still discussing. As far as I know there is no requirement for Americans to have a passport to entire Canada. Simply a birth certificate and other identification. (Of course, a passport is always a good idea!)
  • The Law they changed required Canadian citizens to have a passport to enter the US. You can still come to Canada without a passport, but you DO need proff of US citizenship (birth certificate and any other form of ID) http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel/visitors-e.html
  • I'm going to have to disagree. For car travel, you're fine until 2008: Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable. As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
  • I know they changed the law that Canadians can't fly into the US without a passport anymore, and in the next few years it will also be with driving across the border. As for US citizens coming into Canada, I don't think you need a passport. Although its still a good idea to get a passport. The laws can always change, and the chances of the price of a passport going up are greater than the price dropping. As a side note, where in Canada are you planning on vacationing to?
  • Not yet - I think the Canadian law changes in December/07 to require it for driving. Flying requires a passport
  • Yes. http://www.consular.canada.usembassy.gov/passport_requirement.asp
  • I'm not 100% sure but I'm from Canada and I know we do need a Canadian one to travel there.
  • Yes! Before June 1, 2009 you only needed one to fly into Canada but now you need it for any method of entry.
  • Depends..if you are traveling by land/sea, you can use a passport card which is cheaper. But if by air, then a passport is required. http://gocanada.about.com/od/canadatravelplanner/qt/valid_travel_ID.htm
