  • Just in case you can't find any locals -- how about an answer from someone who has lived and worked in Europe in the past??? Tipping in restaurants is uncommon in Europe. Tips ("service charges") are usually included in the bill -- in addition to that, a small tip (usually the coins left from paying the bill) can be left at the table. Like anywhere else in the world, no one complains if you reward exceptionally good service. Service charges may vary -- for example, in Venice, I once encountered a considerably higher service charge when I sat outside on the patio.
  • Tipping in restaurants and cafes is quite common in Germany. There is no rule on how much the tip should be, in general it's around 5% (sometimes up to 10%) of the bill. The better the service the higher the tip... quite easy. Always tip so that you feel comfortable. If you do not tip it will not be considered impolite.
