1997 Blazer shifter cable adjustment instruction. (may apply to many other vehicles) Chock wheels, or raise vehicle on jack stands or lift. Crawl under the vehicle. Locate the cable adjuster connected to the transmission fluid pan with a bracket, on the left (drivers) side of the vehicle. With a flat blade screw driver remove the metal horseshoe retainer clip. Depress the retainer clips and pull toward the front of vehicle. When there is enough clearance, remove the white plastic retainer clip, you may need to depress the locking tabs on the top. Push the adjuster firmly back into the pan bracket and replace the metal retainer clip. Then inside the vehicle turn on the ignition switch but do not start. Step on the brake and pull the shifter firmly all the way down into low (1st) gear. Then under the vehicle, the spring on the adjuster will hold the cable in the correct position, and then reinsert the white plastic position retainer clip, with the locking tabs facing the correct direction. Return the shifter to the park position. Now start the vehicle and test all gears for correct position. Make sure the vehicle will only start in park or neutral. Lower vehicle or remove wheel chocks.
squeeze the tab behind the bracket. push the cable toward the front of truck to make it shift later and to the rear to shift sooner.
