The reasoning behind "masking" brands on TV shows has to do with tradmark law. The TV show itself is incorporated and cannot infringe on the rights of another incorporated trademark without permission. Certain brands won't pay for advertising to have their product displayed on the show, so the producers mask the item.

You're thinking of product placement. Yes, they usually do want their product featured for free advertising. But some filmakers dont want to have to get permission from the corporations and deal with their requirements, that they alter the brand slightly to not have to deal. They can sue you if you use it without asking them, and ony the really big budget movies arrange for product placement for partial funding for the film. You'd be amazed how complicated it can get. Even there was a movie recently where a Jeep was featured, but when the Director wanted to cut the scene for the sake of the film edit, the producers said NO because they were under contract with Jeep to have it in. Also, the scene was for the jeep to get stuck in the mud and the characters had to walk as part of the scene. Well, Jeep didn't want their car shown in an unfavorable light as if it couldnt handle the mud, so the producers said, NO we can't have the jeep getting studk. THen the director was fuming because Jeep Wrangler was esentially directing the film! So it can really get in the way of making a good film sometimes.

Of course they would like their product displayed IF it was done in a positive way. THey wouldn't want it linked with something unsavory, though. But the biggest issue is who pays? The may have to pay to get their product mentioned or used and they may not want that. Or the company wanting to use it may not want ot pay out the money for permission so they use something similar.

Companies pay BIG bucks to have their products displayed in television and movies. A lot of times, if a show wants to use the product, and the company wont pay for the advertising, the show with blur out the label.
